LAST BREATH

Sometimes I wonder what my grandmother

might have said

on her last breath

Suppose she might have said,

“I love you”

She did when she took us for

A walk on a cold winter day.

Suppose she might have said,

“I care for you”

She did when she rocked us on her front porch.

Suppose she might have said,

“You’re a good child”

She did when she made home jelly or pies.

Or grandmother might have said,

“Don.t cry”

She did every time we fell down

And she picked us up

Gave us a hug and a kiss.

Grandmother’s last breath

Was not what she said

It was how she said it

With a smile
